Medical Applications
Perfluorobutane is used in the formulation of an ultrasound contrast imaging agent that is marketed and sold in a number of countries around the world. The perfluorobutane in encapsulated in a microbubble and offers the benefit of an enhanced ultrasound image.
Perfluorodecalin & Perfluoro-n-octane are supplied as base fluids to companies specialising in providing validated fluids used in vitreoretinal surgery as a heavy tamponade. Their unique physical properties make them ideal intraoperative tools for the repair of: giant retinal tears; diabetic and prematurity retinopathy; and dislocated crystalline and intraocular lenses. The main functions of perfluorocarbon liquids in vitreoretinal surgery is to relocate and hold the detached retina in place during laser reattachment. The fluids protect the macula from exposure to chemicals with potential toxicity, and assist with the removal of foreign bodies.
We have also been involved with many medical projects including:
- Wound healing
- Artificial blood
- Partial and total liquid ventilation
- Islet preservation
- Lung lavage
- Reduction of post surgical adhesions
- Therapeutic hypothermia
